ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Sunday urged the people attaining the age of marriage to go through pre-marital screening for thalassemia to ascertain whether any of the would-be couple carries the gene or not.
In his message to the nation on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day observed on May 8, the prime minister urged the people from all walks of life – especially the parents planning their children’s marriage – to encourage pre-marriage tests of thalassemia.
Thalassemia is a genetically inherited disease which passes to the children through the carrier parents. Therefore, it is necessary to get appropriately tested before marriage to determine whether the boy or girl carries any gene of this deadly disease or not.
